About Christine
Christine Cruz, is a (34 year old, single mom Hispanic) native Staten Island artist and photographer. Her work has been featured previously in the Staten Island advance for an (immersive art gallery) installation she curated back in October of 2018 entitled "Project Alice".
In her newest installation titled "Remember Their Names", she strives to engage and unite the community on an issue that has deeply divided many of our closest family, friends, (colleagues) and neighbors. Presented as lawn art for the public to view, the installation offers a personal view of each of the individual lives that have been lost due to racially influenced/charged police brutality (all too prevalent in our society). By providing personal information and details of each life that has been lost, (behind the names that canvas our news feeds time and time again), the installation attempts to put the focus on the life and humanity that has been lost. Instead it is simply a way to touch on and remember the humanity behind each name. Lives so similar to our own loved ones, so full of potential, that might make us reflect on the humanity that has been obscured/forgotten/lost in the emotionally charged political stances taken around the underlying causes of these incidents.
With an island all too often represented artistically and politically by the works of Scott Libdo, she feels it is important to show the community that there is an equal representation and presence from the opposite standings and viewpoints on these critically important issues. This is her contribution to the Black Lives Movement.
